Commodore was founded by Jack Tramiel in 1955,
originally as a typewriter company, which later
moved into the production of calculators in the seventies. However,
Commodore is best known as a famous computer brand from the micro-computer era of the late 70s, 80s and early 90s. It sold a range of distinctive computers, usually with beautiful designs that were critically acclaimed. Many of their computer models were sold at very low margins and were quite affordable. They were mostly known as games machines, but parents bought them
(or at least were coerced into buying them) for their children to use to do their homework assignments and learn about the fascinating world of computers, which would
likely play a large role in their future. Commodore computers were the domain of tinkerers, both in software and in hardware. Classic Commodore computers have been expanded in amazing ways utilising modern technology.
"Apple's greatest rival"
Commodore was Apple's greatest rival and had as loyal a user
base. Perhaps more so. If not for financial mismanagement Commodore might have continued
to compete with Apple until this day. Almost twenty years later there continues to be a huge cult following
for the various generations of Commodore computers produced, with countless
websites devoted to them, and thousands of enthusiasts who regularly meet at
annual events all around the world.
"There are tens of millions of people that grew up with Commodore machines"
There are
tens of millions of people that grew up with Commodore machines and many tens of
millions more that were affected. For many, a Commodore computer was a toy for playing games, but it was also most people’s introduction to computing, and was utilised for homework and to a lesser extent in business.
The White House was using Commodore 64s until the very late 90s.
Many models of Commodore computers had outstanding graphics and sound capabilities for the day,
which other computer manufacturers could not match until many years later.
"The Commodore 64 is the best selling computer model of all time"
Practically an entire generation was introduced to computing on
Commodore computers. Programmers found access to the incredibly powerful hardware
Commodore machines offered a major draw.
Many artists and musicians began their journey on their Commodore home computers.
Commodore computers inspired generations of Information Technology professionals
and technologists, now in their 30s and over, to enter the technology field. The Commodore 64
is the best selling computer
model of all time with estimated sales of between twenty and thirty millions
units. Later came the Commodore AMIGA range which was a natural progression from
the C64 in terms of features, and in the case of the keyboard models, even in
looks. The AMIGA was the pinnacle of Commodore's technological prowess.
